Forecasters are moving more House races toward Democrats. Here is what that means.

The Cook Political Report is a nonpartisan newsletter. It rates every House race, from solid for one party, to toss-up, where either side could win.

On October ninth, Cook moved eighteen races toward Democrats. Nine were held by Republicans, five by Democrats, and four were open seats.

Five races in Iowa, Pennsylvania and Washington moved from toss-up to lean Democratic. One is the Iowa seat held by Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks.

Cook now projects Democrats gaining nine to nineteen seats. That would put them between two hundred twenty-four and two hundred thirty-four. A majority needs two hundred eighteen.

A week later, Cook shifted eleven more races, including three safe Republican seats that moved to likely Republican.

Cook’s Erin Covey wrote that Democrats need only about twenty percent of the toss-ups to win the majority, if the races leaning their way all hold.

Axios tied the Republican outlook to an unpopular war and high fuel prices. A Republican spokesman said House races are won one district at a time.

Ratings are forecasts, not results. They can change. The real answer comes on November third.
