Can the federal government threaten the people who count your ballot? Late Friday, a judge said no, at least for now.

The Justice Department told California election officials to commit within forty-eight hours to checking lists of suspected noncitizens, and warned of legal consequences.

Judge Trina Thompson found that likely broke the Voting Rights Act. Officials cannot threaten workers, or demand ballots be set aside, based only on the government’s claim.

The administration says it is only trying to stop illegal noncitizen voting. She ruled before hearing its side, MS NOW reports, and it has until Monday to respond.

The order lasts through November sixteenth. So can Washington threaten your ballot counters? Not for now.
