One Week to the Midterms: What 30 Million Early Votes Really Mean
More than 30 million people have already voted. Here is what early votes can and cannot tell you, the two numbers that decide control of Congress, and the races to watch before November 3.

Transcript of the video edition
The midterms are one week away, and more than thirty million people have already voted. Here is what those early votes can tell you, what they cannot, and the two numbers that decide who runs Congress.
Start with the count. As of Sunday, the University of Florida’s Election Lab had logged more than thirty million early and mail votes, well ahead of 2018 and 2022 at this point. Georgia passed one million votes on Monday, and Harris County, Texas, set a first-day record.
Now the part that gets lost. Early votes show who is motivated, not how the final count will go. Most early voters would have voted anyway. Democrats have voted early at higher rates, while Republicans tend to wait for Election Day. It measures energy, not the result. That is the sourced version, no spin. Now, the two numbers.
Two numbers decide the night. In the House, Democrats need a net gain of three seats. In the Senate, Republicans hold fifty-three; Democrats need a net gain of four to reach fifty-one, because a fifty-fifty tie goes to Vice President Vance.
Those four seats run through Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, Texas and Alaska, plus Michigan and Georgia. The closest is Maine, where a Fox News poll had Susan Collins and Troy Jackson tied at forty-nine. Nationally, Democrats lead the generic ballot by about nine points, more than in 2018, when they flipped forty-one seats.
Polls are snapshots, and early votes are energy, not results. Early voting ends Friday in Georgia and Texas. Election Day is Tuesday, November third.
