Senate Orders Inquiry Into Vare’s Election as Pinchot Certifies With a Caveat

The Pennsylvania governor writes that the senator-elect appears chosen on the face of the returns, to avoid distorting the truth.

The Senate on Tuesday adopted a resolution by Minority Leader Robinson empowering its special committee on primary expenditures to investigate the election of William S. Vare, a Pennsylvania Republican, as senator, the Associated Press reported. The Evening Star said senators had debated whether the special committee or the standing committee on privileges and elections should do the work. Senator Reed of Pennsylvania said that mattered little so long as the inquiry was fair and prompt.

The New Britain Herald reported from Harrisburg that Gov. Pinchot stood by his unusual certification of the election. Instead of the customary words saying Vare had been “duly chosen,” he wrote that Vare “appears to have been chosen on the face of returns,” explaining that he changed it so he could sign without distorting the truth. Vare said only that Pinchot had been most unfair to him.
