Senate Committee Restores Three Light Cruisers and Adds Air Funds to Navy Bill
The appropriations panel reverses the House, adding 1,500 men and $2 million for the five-year aviation program.
The Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday inserted into the naval appropriation bill a provision for beginning construction of three additional light cruisers, which the House had defeated, the Associated Press reported.
The committee also agreed to a naval personnel of 84,000 men, 1,500 more than the House bill provided, and added $2,000,000 to the aviation appropriation to carry out the five-year naval aviation program. Senator Hale, a Maine Republican and chairman of the Senate naval committee, will manage the bill on the Senate floor. The Evening Star said Hale and others attacked the Budget Bureau in the committee’s discussion.
