The attorney general’s office said it will independently review the file on the $2.5 million no-bid contract, which began under the state economic development agency.

Lincoln police found that Gov. Jim Pillen’s office was “not implicated in any criminal wrongdoing” in a $2.5 million no-bid state contract, the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office said Friday, according to the Nebraska Examiner. The police department confirmed the statement’s accuracy, the Examiner reported, and has passed its file to the attorney general for an independent review that his office says will begin immediately.

State Auditor Mike Foley, a Republican, flagged the one-year bioeconomy contract with Global Sustainability Developers in a Jan. 6 report that questioned whether it showed favoritism, WOWT reported. It was signed in May 2024 by the Department of Economic Development. Foley said the clearing does not answer questions about that department, the Examiner reported.

Pillen called the investigation “political from the start.” His Democratic challenger, Lynne Walz, urged release of the full file before Tuesday’s election. Jocelyn Brasher, the Democrat challenging Attorney General Mike Hilgers, called for a special prosecutor, WOWT reported.
