County officials were told about three weeks ago and were not given a reason, KUNM reports; the clerk says the county is ready.

Bernalillo County officials expect about 10 U.S. Department of Justice monitors at polling sites on Election Day, Nov. 3, KUNM reported Oct. 29.

The department told the county roughly three weeks earlier and did not say why it was chosen, according to KUNM. County Clerk Michelle Kavanaugh said in an emailed statement that the county has accommodated monitors before without incident. The Secretary of State’s office said it knew of monitors only in Bernalillo County, and the Doña Ana County clerk said she had not heard from the department, KUNM reported.

The department plans about 1,000 monitors nationwide, which its Civil Rights Division head called the largest such effort in its history, NPR reported Oct. 21. A spokesperson said details on locations would come closer to the election and that the department prioritizes competitive races. Adams County, Colo., Clerk Josh Zygielbaum, a Democrat, said his initial thought was that his county’s selection was politically motivated, NPR reported.

Under the previous administration, the department sent monitors to 24 states in 2022, including Bernalillo and San Juan counties, KUNM reported.
