Transcript of the video edition

Trump’s special envoy just called Vladimir Putin a humanitarian, and some of the loudest pushback came from Republicans.

On Wednesday in Saint Petersburg, Russia freed a seventy-four-year-old American it had held since 2022. Envoy Steve Witkoff thanked Putin to his face.

His words: “You are a humanitarian also, sir, and I salute that.”

Republican Senator Thom Tillis called it embarrassing and outrageous. John Cornyn said Putin is a stone-cold killer. Susan Collins said he is certainly not a humanitarian.

Defenders say a kind word is a small price for bringing an American home. But Russia has stepped up strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid this past month. We’ll keep sourcing the words that shape this war.
